6 Post-Surgery Recovery Tips with Oral Surgeon Approval

dca-blog_oral-surgery-three-people

Oral surgery includes procedures such as implant placement and extraction of impacted wisdom teeth. Before your scheduled surgical procedure, your oral surgeon will provide a list of instructions to follow before and after your surgery. Because any type of surgery can be hard on the body, it’s important to take measures to prevent complications such as infection, trauma and unnecessary pain. Follow your dental surgeon’s recommendations carefully to ensure the best outcome.

The six suggestions listed below apply to most dental surgeries, and they may help you optimize your recovery period.

  1. Bleeding:Some bleeding may occur for up to 24 hours after a tooth extraction. Most dental surgeons will give specific instructions for using gauze to control bleeding. Biting on a moist black tea bag may help reduce excessive bleeding and increase clotting. If bleeding continues, contact your surgeon.
  1. Swelling:Face and gum swelling after surgery is normal. Many dental surgeons recommend elevating the head with pillows to reduce swelling. For the first 24 hours after your surgery, you may also use an ice pack. You may also experience some facial muscle stiffness and bruising during this period. Most symptoms are gone in seven to ten days. Call your oral surgeon if they persist.
  1. Rest: After your surgery, plan to take it easy for at least two days. With your doctor’s permission, you may resume normal activities within 48 hours.
  1. Dental Hygiene:For the first day or so after surgery, avoid vigorous spitting and rinsing. If you can open your mouth wide enough, brush and floss gently, and rinse with plain water. After the first 24 hours, you may switch to a saline or saltwater rinse to help keep the incision clean.
  1. Tobacco:Oral surgeons recommend not smoking for at least one full day after a procedure. Smoking can delay healing, and contribute to a painful complication called dry socket. Do not use chewing tobacco until the surgery site is fully healed.
  1. Medications: Oral surgeons provide prescription pain medicine to manage discomfort during recovery. Follow all dosage instructions carefully. If you are given antibiotics, be sure to take the entire prescription, even if your symptoms go away sooner.
