Tooth Crowns in Springfield

No need to worry if you suffer dental damage or have unattractive teeth because a tooth crown can resolve all of these dental concerns and more.

When Is a Tooth Crown the Right Choice?

A crown is a special covering that goes on top of a damaged tooth or a dental implant. Tooth crowns are also referred to as caps because they look a lot like dental caps. You would receive a crown if you have damaged, broken, or cracked a tooth so badly that a filling can’t fix it. Crowns are also given as dental protection after root canals and to hold a bridge firmly between two teeth. Also, crowns are an aesthetic remedy for extremely discolored and poorly-shaped teeth because they are crafted to match the color and size of your surrounding teeth for a completely natural-looking result.

Are Many Kinds of Crowns Are Available?

The two general types of crowns for teeth are temporary and permanent. A temporary crown is ready-made and is only worn while waiting for the production of your permanent crown, which gets specially made for your smile in our dental lab. Your customized permanent crown can be made out of either ceramic or porcelain.

What Is a Ceramic Crown?

These crowns have a ceramic exterior, so they can be made to match the color of your existing teeth. As a result, they look the most natural and are typically used as a front tooth crown. While ceramic caps can withstand the rigors of daily wear, they are also more fragile and likely to break if you have a heavy bite.

How Are Porcelain Crowns Different?

A porcelain crown has a metal-based core covered in porcelain, so it can last for a very long time while retaining its natural beauty. The mixture of porcelain and metal provides more protection against sudden leaks and recurring decay than a gold crown tooth or ceramic crowns. The main disadvantage with porcelain caps is that our dentists need to remove a moderate amount of your underlying dental structure to ensure a proper fit.

What Are the Steps for the Dental Crown Procedure?

You may be surprised to learn that only two dental appointments are usually needed to get a custom-crafted crown. There may be more visits required if you need preliminary dental work, like a root canal.

Typically, the procedure starts with a dental examination to make sure that your damaged tooth has enough strength for a crown. If our dentist feels it can support a tooth cap, the damaged tooth gets scraped and smoothed before a dental impression is made that gets supplied to a lab for permanent crown production. Then, you go home with a temporary crown placed over the damaged tooth to keep it protected while your permanent crown is crafted.

Do You Have to Pay a Lot Money for a Crown?

Your total cost is actually based on the kind of crown you choose and your need for prior dental treatment. Rest assured that at least a portion of the dental crown cost is frequently covered in part by most discount dental plans and dental insurance policies. We encourage you to contact our office if you have any questions.

Do Crowns Require Extensive Care to Stay in Good Condition?

Simply practicing good dental hygiene can make your crowns last for a full 40 years. Just brush your teeth at least twice every day, floss daily, and schedule cleanings and checkups every six months at our practice.

To keep your smile as healthy as it can be, call our office today to arrange an appointment that’s convenient for you.
